Aggressors on the March

Bell Work A mother took her 5 year old son into a crowded candy store. The boy asked his mother if he could have some candy, and she said no. So the boy cried and threw a tantrum, and demanded that he get some candy. Wanting to avoid a public scene, his mother bought him some candy. He ate the candy, and asked his mother for more. His mother said no, and he again started crying and throwing another tantrum. What should the mother do & why?

Militarists Take Over Japan When Great Depression struck in 1930, the government was blamed Militarist made emperor the symbol of state power Leaders wanted to solve economic problems by foreign expansion

Japan Invades Manchuria Manchuria rich in iron & coal Attack on Manchuria direct challenge to League of Nations League condemned Japanese aggression, but had no power to enforce its decisions Japan withdrew from League of Nations

Japan Invades China Japan began to invade 5 northern provinces of China Japanese soldiers were more well equipped and better trained than the more numerous Chinese soldiers Rape of Nanjing Estimated that 300,000 civilians and soldiers were killed Japanese soldiers raped tens of thousands of the city’s women

Italy attacks Ethiopia League’s failure to stop Japan encouraged Mussolini Italy was upset with what they got out of the Versailles Treaty Wanted to restore the glory that was Rome Ethiopians were no match for Italian airplanes, tanks, guns, and poison gas

Haile Selassie, emperor of Ethiopia appealed to League for help “God and history will remember your judgment…It is us today. It will be you tomorrow.” By giving in to Mussolini, Britain and France hoped to keep peace in Europe.

German Reich Expands Needing more lebensraum, Hitler sent in an army into Austria and annexed it Next, he went after Czechoslovakia Western border of Czechoslovakia was called Sudetenland. About 3 million German people lived here

Appeasement What is it? Appease means to pacify, soothe or satisfy Most countries in Europe were anxious to avoid another costly war Prime Minister Chamberlain said, “the Munich agreement has shown that four Great Powers can agree on a way of carrying out a difficult operation by discussion rather than force of Arms.” It was generally felt that giving Hitler the Sudetenland was a good Price to pay for peace

Was Appeasement a Mistake? What do you think?

All that is needed for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing. Do you agree with this statement? Do we do nothing every day?
