They begin to become more democratic but no power to prime minister and cabinet Military leaders took control due to economic problems Were not forceful like Fascists in Europe Kept emperor as state symbol Then invaded Manchuria (China) as a way to help boost the economy in ways of foreign expansion First challenge to League of Nations League failed to stop Japan movement

Mussolini Attacks Ethiopia Encouraged by League inefficiency on Japan Massive attack on Ethiopia The league did nothing Hitler Defies Versailles Treaty Did not obey the restrictions said by the Versailles Treaty Invaded the Rhineland (30 mile buffer zone) GB urged appeasement, giving into an aggressor to keep peace Gave Hitler the upper hand Axis Powers: Germany made agreements with Italy and Japan

United States follows isolationism Many Americans resisted accepting new position as #1 1935  Neutrality Acts, banned loans and the sale of arms to nations at war German Reich Expands Plan to absorb Austria and Czechoslovakia into Third Reich  then Poland and Russia Annexed Austria (GB and France did nothing) Next was Czech. over Sudentenland (a region of Germans in western Czech) Germany asked for it Czech asked for help from France
