 This chapter covers the following for Poetry  Identifying and analyzing elements of poetry from various periods of American literature  Demonstrates awareness of the authors' use of stylistics devices.  Analyzing the use of imagery and language as it contributes to theme.

 Identify, analyze, and apply knowledge of the themes, structures, and elements of dramatic American literature.  Poetry- A form of literature that can be either spoken or written.

 Narrative poems tell a story. Epics and Ballads are narrative poems.  An epic poem tends to be very long.  A ballad is meant to be sung.  A lyric Poem is a short poem where the poet is able to express thoughts and feelings.

 Allusion- A reference to a well known story, piece of art, person, or event.  Conceit- An extended metaphor that applies to an entire poem.  Hyperbole- An exaggeration or overstatement.  Imagery- The use of words that appeal to the five senses.  Irony- Figure of speech in which the ordinary meaning of the words is more or less the opposite of what the poet intends.  Personification- giving human like qualities to something that is not human.  Metaphor- a comparison without using “like” or “as”  Metonymy- substituting a word with another word that’s closely associated with it.  Paradox- a statement that seems contradictory but upon reflection makes sense.  Simile- a comparison using “like” or “as”  Symbolism- the author’s use of representations to convey meaning  Synecdoche- a part is used to represent a whole and vice versa  Understatement- the opposite of a hyperbole

 A drama is a play  The two main types of drama are Comedy and Tragedy  A drama is populated by characters that are either the Protagonist or Antagonist

 Exposition- the introduction to the story  Rising action- introduction to conflict  Climax- the turning point  Falling action- the conflict continues  Conclusion- the ending of the play

 Chapter 3 really focuses on Poetry and drama and the different types, and structures of each. As well as the authors word choices and sentence struture.
