THE RHETORIC OF REVOLUTION

RHETORIC IT IS THE ART OF PERSUASION; INSINCERE LANGUGE.

PERSUASION IS BASED ON THREE TYPES OF APPEAL:

LITERARY ELEMENT PERSUASION: A FORM OF WRITING, USUALLY NONFICTION, THAT ATTEMPTS TO INFLUENCE READERS TO THINK OR ACT IN A PARTICULAR WAY.

PERSUASIVE APPROACHES 1.APPEAL TO REASON, LOGIC, AND EVIDENCE.

2.APPEAL TO EMOTIONS, SUCH AS FEAR, PRIDE, OR HATE

3.ETHICAL APPEAL, OR PERSUASION BASED ON WHAT WE OURSELVES, MORAL PHILOSOPHERS, OR THE MAJORITY OF PEOPLE IN OUR CULTURE THINK IS RIGHT

RHETORIC DEVICES EXAMPLES: 1.FIGURATIAVE LANGUAGE 2.HYPERBOLE

RHETORICAL QUESTIONS QUESTIONS TO WHICH NO ANSWER IS EXPECTED

A RHETORICAL QUESTION EMPHASIZES THE OBVIOUS ANSWER TO WHAT IS ASKED. EXAMPLE: “WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?”

PARALLELISM IS THE USE OF A SERIES OF WORDS, PHRASES, OR SENTENCES THAT HAVE SIMILAR GRAMMATICAL FORM.

CONNOTATIVE LANGUAGE REFERS TO THE SUGGESTED OR IMPLIED MEANINGS THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH A WORD BEYOND ITS DICTIONARY (DENNOTATIVE) MEANING

FAULTY REASONING PEOPLE SEEKING TO PERSUADE OFTEN USE FAULTY REASONING.

COMMON TYPES OF FAULTY REASONING 1. CIRCULAR REASONING: AN ARGUMENT THAT MOVES IN A CIRCLE, ASSUMING WHAT IT PURPORTS TO PROVE

EXAMPLE: “PABLO PICASSO WAS AN ARTISTIC GENIUS BECAUSE HIS PAINTINGS SHOW EXTRAORDINARY TALENT.”

2.BANDWAGON REASONING: PRESENTS AN ACTION OR IDEA AS VALID BECAUSE OTHERS ARE DOING OR THINKING IT.

EXAMPLE: WHEN YOU TRY TO PERSUADE YOUR PARENTS TO LET YOU TO A PARTY “BECAUSE EVERYONE ELSE IS GOING.”

THE ROAD TO INDEPENDENCE PERSUASIVE RHETORIC WAS CRITICAL IN CONVINCING AMERICAN COLONIES TO BREAK WITH GREAT BRITAIN.

ALTHOUGH RHETORIC IS IMPORTANT, IMAGES HAVE BECOME EQUALLY VITAL IN POLITICAL PERSUASION.

SPEAKERS OFTEN EXPRESS THROUGH CARTOONS WHAT THEIR AUDIENCE ALREADY FEELS.
