Tener que / Hay que  Both of these expressions are used to talk about what someone “has to do” or “must” do.  Uds. Tienen que tomar apuntes.  Hay que tomar apuntes en las clases.

Hay que is an impersonal phrase meaning there is not a specific subject to the verb “hay”. “one” must… HAY QUE

Set up:  Sentence structure  Hay + que + infinitive Remember, infinitives end with –ar, -er, -ir  You have to sweep the floor. (in general)  Hay que barrer el piso.

This one is specific to the person that “has to…” Because of this: Conjugate the verb tener for subject Tener que
