1 TENER in the Present tense
The verb TENER is irregular in the Present tense. The verb endings are the same as other –ER verbs, but it has a stem change in all the singular forms and in the “they / Uds” form.

3 The verb TENER is also used to ask/tell ages
The verb TENER is also used to ask/tell ages. In Spanish when asking someone’s age, you don’t ask, “How old are you?” You ask “How many years do you have?” ¿Cuántos años tienes? When you tell how old you are, you say “I have ____ years.” Tengo ____ años.

4 There are also some expressions in English using “I am”, “you are”, etc., where Spanish uses the phrase “to have”. A few of these are: I am hungry tengo hambre you are thirsty tienes sed Elena is cold Elena tiene frío Elena is very cold. Elena tiene much frío we are warm tenemos calor
