Density Definition- the ratio of the mass of an object to it’s volume What’s the definition of mass again? volume? Density is a physical property used to describe how tightly packed the molecules are in the object. Which is more dense….a pound of feathers or a pound of iron? Equation- D = m v Let’s try some Practice Problems from the overhead.

Title- Density of Oil vs. Water Lab Purpose- Materials- Procedure- 1. 2. 3. etc…. Data Tables- one for water and one for oil Graph- title, labels, units, 2 data sets, slope for each line Conclusion Questions 1. Does changing the volume of the water (or oil) change the density of the water (or oil)? EXPLAIN USING YOUR DATA and GRAPH! 2. Do different liquids have different densities? EXPLAIN USING YOUR DATA and GRAPH!

Graphing Use LoggerPro X-axis is volume- 10 mL, 20 mL, 30 mL Y-axis is mass of WATER- in grams Go to DATA then select NEW MANUAL COLUMN to get a 2nd y-axis 2nd Y-axis data set is mass of OIL- in grams Double click on graph to set scale from 0 to 40 for both the x and Y axis Double click on graph, go to AXES OPTIONS and check the box that says mass of oil to see the 2nd data set on your graph Go to ANALYZE then LINEAR FIT to get the slope of each line- THAT IS THE DENSITY!!!!
