UPMC McKeesport Highlights Supplemental funding received for clinical trials effort at UPMC McKeesport site –Provides for CRC (1FTE) hired Data Coordinator (.5FTE)-pending

UPMC McKeesport Highlights Barriers to clinical trials effort at UPMC McKeesport –Several physicians have no formal affiliation with UPMC Health System or University of Pittsburgh (IRB of record for McKeesport) Solution –Working with local mentor (U Pitt) to establish affiliation with Pitt for these docs –Assisting with coordination of eligibility requirements necessary to conduct trials

UPMC McKeesport Highlights Navigator Study Defined and data collection begun Notification by Commonwealth of Pennsylvania of eligibility for Health Formula Funds (tobacco settlement monies) –Appropriation of $58k –UPMC McKeesport has dedicated funds to our research efforts

UPMC McKeesport Highlights Patient navigation program initiated in 2 additional sites for a total of 4 hospitals served (spanning 3 health systems in the W. Pa. region) –Somerset Oncology Center –UPMC McKeesport

Navigator & Behavioral Trials UPMC McKeesport/ROCOG Radiation Oncology Minorities Outreach Program - Patient Navigator –McKeesport, Mercy, New Castle, Somerset How can radiation oncologists better serve their patients? A randomized study to determine whether radiation oncologists can improve patient satisfaction by attempting to meet their patients' preferences –McKeesport, Murtha, New Castle

Navigator Study Aims –Assess outcomes between patients in navigator program (Jameson [intervention site]) and non-navigator program (Murtha [control site]) –Assess outcomes between eligible patients who participated in navigator program and those who did not participate in the program at Jameson

Navigator Study (cont) Research questions –Did more navigated patients receive treatment that those not navigated? –Did more navigated patients receive treatment sooner than those not navigated? –Did radiation treatment occur consistent with what was prescribed?
