1 MUHC Innovation Model

2 Innovation Model Purpose: To standardize the methodology used for:
Performance Improvement Evidence-Based Practice Research Create a common language and understanding for these activities Improve sharing of lessons learned and best practices

3 Innovation Model Process Improvement Evidence-Based Practice Research
Focus “Doing it right” “Doing the right thing” “Doing things better” Overview Process impact on local patient outcomes Process impact on local practice issue Process impact on care for a patient population Driver Local data Local clinical problem General problem Goal Improve healthcare delivery methods Synthesis of best practice Generation of new knowledge

4 Innovation Model Process Improvement Evidence-Based Practice Research
Definition Systematic, data-guided activities designed to bring about immediate improvement in healthcare delivery in particular settings The conscientious integration of the best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient preferences in nursing practice (adapted from Sackett et al., 2000 A systematic investigation, including research development, testing, and evaluation, designed to develop or contribute to generalizeable knowledge. (Burns and Grove, 2005, p. 750).

5 Process Improvement Plan Problem Identification and desired outcome
Identify most likely causes through data Identify potential & data needed for evaluation Do Implement solution & collect data needed for evaluation Study (the results) Analyze data and develop conclusions Act Recommend further study and/or action

6 Evidence-Based Practice
Identify clinical question P – Identify population or condition I – Consider new intervention C – Compare with alternative interventions O – Determine measurable outcomes Evaluate new evidence-based practices based upon peer-reviewed literature Review internal performance data Collect local data Synthesize findings Compare literature findings to local practice Design intervention, i.e. best practice Implement best practice Evaluate outcomes Revise intervention based on evaluation findings

7 Research Select topic Formulate research questions Review literature
Evaluate literature Refine research questions Design the research -Methods -Sample protocol Obtain Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval Collect data according to protocol Analyze data State results and conclusions Identify limitations Determine extent of generalizeability Publish findings

8 Roles Process Improvement Evidence-Based Practice Research Participant
Contributes as a team member to unit-based projects, such as collecting data, posing questions/ideas to the team, assessing clinical practice, reviewing relevant materials (guidelines, protocols, literature, etc.) Preparation for participants is ‘just in time’, requiring no formal classes or training. Completes research-related tasks as assigned by the team leader and/or lead investigator(s). Completes IRB training/certification as required.

9 Roles Process Improvement Evidence-Based Practice Research Team Leader
Experience in leading quality improvement projects May or may not have formal training in QI. Serves as chair of project or QI committee. Leads team, plans project, data collection and outcome measures. Reports improve- ment on dashboard Leads EBP project Searches databases with interpretation of relevant research studies to answer clinical questions.. Successfully completes the MUHC EBP program and/or formal coursework in EBP Communicates best practices to system leadership team. Submits project to PI-3 database. Knowledgeable about requirements for ethical conduct related to implementing research protocols. May have formal research methods training, but is not required. Must complete IRB certification training. Has a working relationship with principal investigator

10 Roles Process Improvement Evidence-Based Practice Research Mentor
Experience leading multiple quality improvement projects and communicating with leaders/Office of Clinical. PI-LDP course or equivalent. Demonstrates leadership abilities, guiding team. Serves as a resource on quality improvement efforts and process. . Able to supervise a variety of EBP learners, Completes MUHC EBP program. Teaches learners in EBP concepts, critical appraisal of research, outcome design and evaluation, and implementation of project work into clinical products,. Serves as the principal or co-investigator. Has formal preparation in research methods and conduct of research. Meets IRB requirements for project approval and serving as team leader. Disseminates results to appropriate audiences.

15 Innovation Council The Innovation Council serves as the oversight committee for the selection, coordination and evaluation of process improvement, evidence-based practice and research projects by nurses throughout MUHC.

16 Innovation Council Members
Office of Clinical Effectiveness Center for Nursing Excellence Nursing Leadership Sinclair School of Nursing Shared Governance Practice Council chairs Innovation Coaches Advanced Practice nurses Center for Healthcare Quality Gold Level PAWS staff nurses

17 Innovation Council Promotes and facilitates a standardized approach for performance improvement, evidence-based practice projects and research through implementation of the Innovation Model. Reviews proposals for innovation projects to assure that the appropriate methodology has been selected and resources have been allocated.

18 Innovation Council Assigns sponsors, mentors and resources as indicated to support nurses in their efforts Provides and promotes education of nurses at all levels to develop skills for performance improvement, data measurement and evaluation.

19 Innovation Council Monitors progress of projects and evaluate impact of results on clinical performance. Assures that results of innovation projects are incorporated into nursing practice as appropriate. Promotes the spread of lessons learned and best practices identified through this work through the use of a single source repository or database.

20 Innovation Council Encourages sharing of new knowledge through publishing in peer-reviewed journals, posters, abstracts and presentations at local, regional and national conferences. Assures awareness of the myriad of ongoing internal and external innovation initiatives and expectations across the system.

21 The Innovation Council is now being formed !
