Characteristics of depression Characteristics are the ‘symptoms’ or ‘common traits’ of an illness (mental/physical)

Who diagnoses patients with depression? Doctors or Clinicians. They require classification systems to help them make accurate diagnosis. The two most widely used classification systems are ICD-10 and DSM-IV.

Diagnostic criteria for major depressive disorder according to the DSM-IV Task - According to the DSM-IV What are the 2 core symptoms of clinical depression? Do both of the core symptoms have to be present in order to be diagnosed with depression? How many symptoms overall must be present to be diagnosed with clinical depression? How long must the symptoms be present in order to be diagnosed with clinical depression? In order to be diagnosed, what must the symptoms not be due to? What must the symptoms cause significant distress to?

Activity Using the DSM – IV Criteria, decide whether the person should be diagnosed as clinically depressed.
