5 Identifying Psychological Disorders
Defining “normal” Deviation from normality Considers the majority Has limitations Majority is not always right- morals Adjustment How people get along in the world physically, emotionally, and socially Eating, dressing, living by societal rules Psychological health Self-actualizing (Jung and Maslow) Striving process for normal, healthy acceptance/expression of one’s own individuality

6 Is This Normal? What we consider normal vs. abnormal behavior depends on the context of the behavior. Here are men in teh Michoacan State, Mexico displaying cultural dance masks. Why must you consider the cultural context of a behavior when determining whether or not a behavior is normal?

7 Psychological Disorders
A psychological or behavioral pattern that occurs in an individual and is thought to cause distress or disability that is not expected as part of normal development or culture

8 Classification DSM-IV-TR:
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth version revised in 2013 Used to classify and categorize mental illness Operates on 5 dimensions or axes

9 Classifying a Disorder
Within each diagnostic category, the following descriptions are included: Essential features- characteristics that define the disorder Associated features- additional features usually present Differential diagnosis- info used to distinguish a disorder from another Diagnostic criteria- list of symptoms that must be present

Refer to Figure 16.3: “DSM-IV: Major Psychological Disorders” Pg. 452 What does Axis 1 of the DSM-IV consider when classifying mental illness?

11 Classification 5 Axes of DSM-IV:
Axis 1: Clinical Disorders/Categorized Axis 2: Personality Disorders/ Mental Retardation Axis 3: Medical Disorders Axis 4: Psychosocial Stressors Axis 5: Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) (social, occupational, leisure)
