Coordinating Conjunctions

1.I was so tired, for the baby was up crying all night. 2.I want to go to the party, and I want to go to the movies. 3.I do not like ketchup, nor do I like mustard. 4.I really want to go, but I didn’t finish my homework. 5.He said I could go tonight,or I could go tomorrow night. 6.He thought he was right, yet he was sooo wrong. 7.I didn’t study, so I am sure I will bomb the test.

When combining two independent clauses, place a comma BEFORE the conjunction

Independent clause – a fancy-schmancy way of saying a complete sentence

I studied all night for the test. I studied for I wanted a a good grade.

My favorite food is peanut butter and jelly.

I love doing soccer tournaments and I love surfing tournaments.

I am a fast runner but I have poor form.

I like pizza. Pizza tastes good. Pizza is my favorite food. There are many different types of pizza.

But = Yet I hate soccer, but I love football.

Or... Offers a choice I want to go to the mall or the movies.

Or... Offers a choice I want to go to the mall or the movies.

I want to go to the mall, and then I want to go to the movies.

But = Yet I like the SB, but/yet he doesn’t like me.

So = in conclusion I did not study, so I failed miserably.

So = in conclusion Don’t go so fast.
