2. Coordinating Conjunctions
Are used to connect similar kinds of words or similar groups of words.
Mrs. Militello likes Starbucks. Her favorite drink is the soy pumpkin spice latte.
* Mrs. Militello likes Starbucks, and her favorite drink is the soy pumpkin spice latte.

3. Rules for Success!
When a coordinating conjunction joins two words, phrases, or subordinate clauses, no comma should be placed before the conjunction
Ex: I love cookies and milk.
A coordinating conjunction joining three or more words, phrases, or subordinate clauses creates a series and requires commas between the elements.
Ex: I love peanut butter, cookies, and milk.
A coordinating conjunction joining two independent clauses creates a compound sentence and requires a comma before the coordinating conjunction.
Ex: Raine ate all the cookies, so Hunter drank all the milk.

5. Subordinating Conjunctions
These connect two complete ideas by making one idea subordinate (lower in rank or importance) to the other idea. It may appear at the beginning of the sentence or between two clauses in a sentence.
After, although, as, as if, as long as, as though, because, before, if, in order that, provided, since, so that, than, though, till, unless, until, when, whenever, where, while
After school is over, I will go to the gym.
The GBHS football game was cancelled because it’s raining outside.

6. Correlative Conjunctions are always used in pairs!
Neither … nor
Either … or
Not only .. but also
Both…and
Mrs. Militello will get either a pumpkin spice latte or a trente iced coffee.
