War begins in 1754 - called the Seven Years’ War in Europe 22 year old Major George Washington launched surprise attack on the French. French countered and Washington and his troops had to defend Fort Necessity against 700 French and Indians. They would eventually surrender and Washington was released. Fort Necessity (present)

In 1757, William Pitt is named British Prime Minister, and makes winning the war his top priority, sending Britain’s best generals to North America. William Pitt… not to be confused with Brad Pitt.

In 1759, Gen. James Wolfe captures the New France capital, Quebec with a surprise attack up steep cliffs along the St. Lawrence River.

Unfortunately, Wolfe was killed in battle, but not before being told the the British had won. Quebec was surrendered on September 18, 1759.

War officially ends in 1763 with the Treaty of Paris, signed by England and France. French has no power in North America, Brit. gained Canada (eh?) and all Fr. lands east of the Mississippi, except New Orleans. Spain gave up Florida to Brit., but received all Fr. lands west of the Mississippi River, along with New Orleans.

Albany Congress met in 1754 to discuss a stronger alliance with the Iroquois and a united colonial defense. Ben Franklin (Penn. Delegate) proposes Albany Plan of Union to create “one general government for 13 colonies to make laws, raise taxes and set up defense for the colonies.”

Ben Franklin publishes the first political cartoon to promote the Albany Plan of Union. Delegates vote to accept the plan, but it was not approved by any of the colonies.

Post-Assessment Create a complete 5 sentence paragraph to answer the question: Explain how the French and Indian War helped create the first attempt at unifying the English colonies in North America. What were the results of that attempt?
