Comm Arts Day 3 (Advisory Day!) Bell Ringer Take out your homework. Compare the letters you and your group brought in. What are the differences? The similarities? Please write down. (3 minutes, 3 lines)

Learning Goal and Essential Question O Learning Goal(s): Ideas are stronger when supported by sufficient relevant details. Facts can support opinions. Analyze how heroes interact with or impact others and their surroundings in literature and real life. O Essential Question: How does a writer know when he has used a sufficient amount of relevant details (facts) to support the main idea (opinion)?

What are the different types of letters? O Formal vs. informal O What do you think is the difference between these two? Discuss for 1 min.

Formal Put your hero’s address here. If your hero is dead we will discuss. O Mrs.Thompson O 1459 University Drive O Hershey, PA O October 20, 2011 O Dear Michelle Kwan, O When I recall my childhood the hero I always think of is you…………. O Sincerely, O Grace Thompson

Formal letter continued O When you write your formal letter use your best word choice, no slang, don’t talk to them like a friend. O Address them with respect. O In the first paragraph always explain why you are writing. O No indenting in paragraphs

Informal O 506 Country Lane O North Baysville, CA O July 16, 2007 O Dear Susan, O It feels like such a long time since the last time I saw you. I know it's only been several weeks since I saw you. So far my summer has been great! I spend my all my weekends at the beach. I am getting a nice tan and you can no longer say I am paler than you. I have been playing lots of volleyball, surfing and building a nice collection of sea shells. Just this past weekend I took second place in a sandcastle building contest! O On the weekdays I work. I drive an ice cream truck around and sell ice cream to the kids. It is so cool. It is a combination of the two things I love most, ice cream and kids. The pay isn't too great but I love the job so much. O I hope the summer's been going well for you too. There's only a month and a half left in summer vacation and after that it's back to school. Would you like to meet up some time before school starts? O Your friend, O Signature P.S. John Austin says hi.

Review FCAS O Body paragraphs are in TDEDEC format: (T/Opinion=15, D/Facts=30, E-30, C=3): 78pts O Format of letter fits the intended audience: 2 pts O Introduction Paragraph (interest statement: 2, restate question: 2, hints in order; numbered: 6) and Conclusion Paragraph (restates question: 2, topics in order; numbered: 2, gives overall opinion: 2): 20 pts

Introduction O Dear Michelle Kwan, O When I recall my childhood the hero I always think of is you. Some people may wonder, why would someone consider an ice skater a hero? As proof that you are my hero I have three reasons: you are inspiring, brave, and caring. I can see all of these throughout your ice skating career, but also through your charity work, words, and actions in your daily life.

Google Docs O Please log on to google docs. Create a folder with your name. O Example: G.ThompsonCommArts7.4 O Share with Mrs.Thompson O Then create a document within that folder and begin typing your letter in that document following all of the FCAS. O Any questions?

Your assignment (13 mins) O You need to do one of two things: O 1. If you have not finished your research finish filling in your organizer with facts and explain each one. In addition edit your organizer based on the feedback you were given and reflection you completed. O 2. Once you finish your research and editing turn your graphic organizer into the body of the letter for each character trait as shown in the example. Today you may also do the introduction since we discussed.

Exit Ticket O Was writing the letter easy or hard? Why? (2 mins) O If still researching: What is the best thing about your research? What is the most challenging? (2 mins)
