First Nations Fishing By Jaspreet

Types of Fish The main types of fish are halibut*, salmon*, herring, ling cod, smelt, sturgeon, and eulachon. They preserved the fish by smoking or drying them. The fathers caught the fish. The mothers prepared them. The children helped the parents.

Weirs A weir is a type of fence. They go across a stream. The salmon are caught by getting trapped against the fence. Fishermen spear or net the fish.

Nets Nets are made from cedar bark and stems from nettle plants. Reef nets are tied between two canoes. A dip net has a long handle with a net attached. There are bag shaped nets that go across a stream attached to posts.

Traps Traps are made out of logs or rocks placed on the beach. The First Nations use the tides to catch the fish.

Hooks,Lures,Rakes and Harpoons Hooks caught halibut. Spears and lures caught ling cod. Rakes caught herring.. Rakes and dip nets caught smelt. Harpoons caught sturgeon.
