Fishing

both Canada’s East and West Coast have suffered collapses of fisheries that has devastated the industry West Coast - Salmon East Coast - Cod Canada is not one of the top fishing nations in the world, but is one of the leading exporters

East Coast the East Coast was at one time very profitable fishing grounds due to many factors: wide continental shelf fishing banks (areas on the shelf that are less than 150 m deep) meeting of the Labrador Current and Gulf Stream

Crisis for the Fisheries fishermen started noticing the size and quantity of the fish they were catching were rapidly decreasing, especially with the Northern Cod the government responded by stopping all fishing for Northern Cod and by drastically reducing how much the other species could be caught

East Coast Fishery Collapse Why did the East Coast Fishery Collapse? Overfishing (fishing allowances too high to be sustained) Improved Fishing Technology (better trawlers, sonar / satellite navigation systems made fish less likely to escape the traps) Uncontrolled Foreign Fishing (other nations not practicing sustainable fishing methods)

Destructive Fishing Practices (using trawlers to try and catch one type of fish but catching everything else in the process) Changes in Natural Conditions (water temperature / salinity levels dropping, decline in the sealing industry)

West Coast Fisheries most important catch on the West Coast is Salmon (coho, chum, spring (chinook), pink and sockeye) they also catch herring, halibut, cod, crab, tuna, shrimp and oysters

Collapse of the West Coast Fishery after the collapse of the East Coast fishery scientists and politicians re-evaluated the policies on the West Coast there are several possible reasons for the collapse of the West Coast Salmon fishery Overfishing Changes in the environment (temperature increase) Lack of a Salmon Fishing Treaty

Challenges facing the West Coast Fishery is difficult to find a balance between supply and demand, especialy when there is a limited supply and growing demand three main competing demands for salmon in BC commercial fishing sport fishing fishing by First Nations
