2. Weir fishing Weirs are large structures resembling corrals.
Weirs are used near shore to catch small herring (commonly called sardines)
The fish are diverted into the weir by a fence that stretches from the shore to the weir.
The fishermen then run a seine net around the inside of the weir and gather the catch inside.
In certain places, at low tide, the fishermen can walk out to take in the catch.

3. Long lining
The long line is used to catch halibut and Pacific Coast cod.
The gear consists of a strong rope made up in lengths to which are attached to shorter lines that have baited hooks.
The long line is set out on the very bottom of the sea and is later hauled in with its catch, using a power winch.

4. Cod Trapping
Cod traps are used by thousands of Newfoundland inshore fishermen.
The net which resembles a huge room with a net floor and walls, is set at varying depths in the water.
The net hangs down from the surface of the water
Cod swim into net and become trapped.
The net is then hauled up with the catch of the fish in it.

5. Trolling
The troller used for salmon catching is marked by long poles that extend over the side of the vessel while fishing.
To these poles are attached weighted lines bearing lures that are dragged through the water at a slow speed.
The salmon are caught on the lures. (this method is used more often for fishing in the Western Cordillera)

6. Gill Netting
From a drum on the stern of the boat, the gill is set out.
It hangs like a curtain in the water.
The fish are caught when they become entangled as they swim into the net.
This method is the most popular one for salmon fishing on the Pacific Coast

7. Purse Seining
The huge net or purse seine, is set out from a platform, or table, at the stern.
The net is then manoeuvred to encircle a school of fish.
The seine is then drawn together, and the fish are scooped into the boat with a large dip net on a long pole.

8. Otter Trawling
The otter trawl is a large bag-shaped net that is dragged along the ocean floor 
The net is held open by boards called ``doors``.
The fish become trapped in the closed end of the net. (think of the movie `Finding Nemo`)
