First Nations Fishing - by Johnny

Fishing-Types of Fish *Halibut, *salmon, smelt, eulachon, ling cod, and sturgeon were the main types of fish. The fathers caught the fish, the mothers prepared the fish, and the children helped.

Weirs A type of fence that was built across the stream. Salmon were trapped against the fence. Fishermen spear or net the fish.

Nets Twine was made from cedar bark and stems from nettle plants. A reef net was a net between canoes. A dip net has a long handle with a net attached to it. Bag shaped nets are attached to posts.

Traps Traps were made out of logs or rocks placed on the beach. They used the tides to catch the fish.

Hooks, Lures, Rakes and Harpoons Hooks caught halibut Spears and lures caught ling cod. Rakes caught herring. Rakes and dip nets caught smelts. Harpoons caught sturgeon. Spears caught salmon.
