Weight

With a partner, discuss what you think is the difference between measuring in CUSTOMARY and METRIC units

You should have discussed Customary Measurement is one way we measure things in the united states. Metric Measurement is how things are measured all around the world.

Customary System A system of measurement used in the U.S. The system includes units for measuring weight, length, capacity, and temperature.

Day 1 Today we will be discussing how to measure WEIGHT using CUSTOMARY units of measurement. Weight- a measure of how heavy an object is.

Ounce (oz) A customary unit of weight equaling of a pound. This means 16 oz. = 1 pound. About the same weight as ONE slice of bread 1 oz.

Pound (lb) A customary unit of weight equal to 16 ounces. About the same as a small loaf of bread. 16 slices or ounces = 1 loaf of bread or pound

Ton (t) A customary unit of weight equal to 2,000 pounds. About the same weight as a large truck. =

Remember that weight is the measure of how heavy an object is in relation to earth’s gravity pushing down on it. Mass is the amount of space an object takes up. Day 2 Today we will be discussing how to measure WEIGHT using METRIC units of measurement.

Metric System A system of measurement used around the world based on tens. The basic unit for mass/weight is the gram.

Gram (g) The standard unit of mass in the metric system. About 1 large paperclip or 1 small grape. 1 grape

Kilogram (kg) A metric unit of mass equal to 1,000 grams. About the same as a pineapple or 1 bunch of grapes The whole bunch
