1 Measurement and Conversions

2 How Heavy? How would you describe the weight of a toy car?
The weight of a real car?

3 WEIGHT Weight is the measure of how heavy an object is. It can also be described as the vertical force exerted by a mass as a result of gravity.

4 Customary Weight The customary units for measuring weight are ounce (oz), pound (lb), and ton (T).

5 One toy car weighs about 1 oz.
Ounce One toy car weighs about 1 oz.

6 One remote-control car weighs about 1 lb.
Pound One remote-control car weighs about 1 lb.

7 One real car weighs about 1 T.
Ton One real car weighs about 1 T.

8 Equivalent Weights 16 ounces = 1 pound 2,000 pounds = 1 ton
*So, how many toy cars would make a pound? How many remote-control cars would make a ton?

9 Finding a Reasonable Unit of Weight
Mark got a check-up. He wants to know how much he weighs. Will the doctor tell his weight in ounces, pounds, or tons? The most reasonable unit of weight is usually the greatest unit that is not greater than what is being measured.

10 So, the doctor will tell Mark’s weight in pounds.
Mark weighs more than 1 ounce and more than 1 pound. He does not weigh more than 1 ton. The greatest unit that is not greater than Mark’s weight is the pound. So, the doctor will tell Mark’s weight in pounds.

11 Finding a Reasonable Unit of Weight
What is the most reasonable unit of weight for an airplane?

12 Finding a Reasonable Unit of Weight
What is the most reasonable unit of weight for a pen?

13 Metric units for measuring weight are gram (g) and kilogram (kg).
Metric Weight Metric units for measuring weight are gram (g) and kilogram (kg).

14 The weight of a dollar bill or a small paper clip is about 1 gram.

15 The weight of a baseball bat is about 1 kilogram.

16 *So, how many paper clips would make a kilogram?
Equivalent Weights 1 kilogram = 1,000 grams *So, how many paper clips would make a kilogram?

17 Finding a Reasonable Measurement
1 g or 1 kg

18 Finding a Reasonable Measurement
20 g or 200 g

19 Finding a Reasonable Measurement
10 g or 10 kg

20 Finding a Reasonable Measurement
40 kg or 4,000 kg

21 How to Remember Grams and Kilograms
You can remember grams by thinking of a paper clip and by comparing it to an ounce. A gram is similar to an ounce. You can remember kilograms by thinking of a baseball bat and by comparing it to a pound. A kilogram is similar to a pound. *A kilogram is actually a little more than 2 pounds.

22 Let’s Compare A small toy car weighs about an ounce. A small paper clip weighs about a gram. Which is the greater unit? Why? Would a button’s weight be closer to 3 oz or 3 g?

23 Reminders… It takes 16 ounces to make a pound, and it takes 2,000 pounds to make a ton. “kilo” means 1,000, so 1 kilogram is 1 “thousand” grams Grams are the lightest of all the units we have studied. Kilograms can be compared to pounds, and grams can be compared to ounces.

24 Let’s Practice! About how much does an apple weigh? A. 4 grams B. 4 kilograms C. 4 ounces D. 4 pounds

25 Which unit would be BEST used to measure the weight of one carrot. A
Which unit would be BEST used to measure the weight of one carrot? A. centimeter B. kilogram C. gram D. meter

26 Which unit could be used to measure the mass of a pencil. A
Which unit could be used to measure the mass of a pencil? A. centimeters B. grams C. liters D. degrees

27 How much might a newborn baby weigh. A. 20 - 11 pounds B
How much might a newborn baby weigh? A pounds B pounds C pounds D pounds

28 Which of the items weighs the MOST?
9 ounces 13 pounds 100 pounds 2 tons

29 Sandy is packing a picnic basket
Sandy is packing a picnic basket. She has items that weigh 14 grams, 1 kilogram, and 3 grams. Which is true about the weight of the items? A. 14 grams ˂ 3 grams B. 1 kilogram ˃ 3 grams C. 14 grams = 1 kilogram D. 3 grams ˃ 1 kilogram

30 Matt is putting objects in his suitcase
Matt is putting objects in his suitcase. He has objects that weigh 50 grams, 1 kilogram, and 5 grams. Which is true about the weight of the objects? A. 50 grams ˂ 5 grams B. 50 grams = 5 grams C. 1 kilogram ˂ 50 grams D. 1 kilogram ˃ 50 grams

31 Customary Length The units of customary length are inch (in), foot (ft), yard (yd) and mile (mi).

32 Metric Length The units of metric length are meter (m), centimeter (cm), and kilometer (km).

33 Kilometer A kilometer (km) is used to measure longer distances and lengths. A kilometer is about the length of 10 football fields. Its is similar to a mile.

34 Meter A meter (m) is about the width of a door. Think of a meter stick. It is similar to a yard.

35 A centimeter (cm) is about the width of your index finger.

36 Equivalent Measures 1 meter = 100 cm *centi means hundred 1 kilometer = 1,000 meters *kilo means thousand

37 Choosing a reasonable unit of measure…
The length of a key: km, m, or cm?

38 Choosing a reasonable unit of measure…
The distance around the school: km, m, or cm?

39 Choosing a reasonable unit of measure…
Distance between two towns: km, m, or cm?

40 How do I convert units of measurement?
Whether you are converting units of time, length, capacity, or weight, you can use multiplication to find equivalent measurements.
