M4M1. Students will understand the concept of weight and how to measure weight. Use standard and metric units to measure the weight of objects. Know units used to measure weight (gram, kilogram, ounces, pounds, and tons). Compare one unit to another within a single system of measurement.

4 What are the Standard Units (customary units) used to measure weight?
Ounce – a toy car weighs about one ounce Pound – a remote control car weighs about one pound Ton – a full size car weighs about one ton

5 Standard or Customary Units
Ounce – oz. Use ounces to measure objects that weigh less than a pound. 16 ounces equals 1 pound.

6 Standard or Customary Units
You would use ounces to measure the weight of a spider. The spider weighs 2 oz.

7 Standard or Customary Units
Pound – lb. Use pounds to measure objects that weigh less than a ton, but more than an ounce. 2,000 pounds equals 1 ton.

8 Standard or Customary Units
You would use pounds to measure the weight of the rooster. The rooster weighs 4 lb.

9 Standard or Customary Units
Ton – T Use tons to weigh objects that weigh more than 2,000 pounds 1 T (ton) equals 2,000 lbs (pounds)

You would use tons to measure the weight of an elephant. About how much does the elephant weigh?

Remember 2,000 lbs equals 1 T If each ton equals 2,000 lbs you would first round 5,962 and then divide by 2,000. Round: 5, ?
