1 Monday, March 17, 2014 POTD Kelly has shoes that weigh different amounts. The following dot plot shows the weight of the shoes. Each dot represents 1 shoe. How much do the two heaviest shoes weigh all together? Show your work!!!

2 Homework Review Elapsed Time chart of your weekend

3 The Units of Capacity Capacity:
It is the amount a container can hold. Within the customary system, the common units for measuring capacity are fluid ounces, cups, pints, quarts, and gallons. Examples: A standard cup of coffee. A can of coke is 12 fluid ounces. A gallon of milk.

4 Gallon + + + A customary unit of capacity. One gallon is equal to 4 quarts. 1 gal = 4 qt

5 One quart is equal to 2 pints.
Quart (qt.) 1tall glass of lemonade = 1 pint One quart is equal to 2 pints. 1 qt = 2 pt

6 One pint ( approx. a tall glass of lemonade) is equal to 2 cups.
Pint (pt.) One pint ( approx. a tall glass of lemonade) is equal to 2 cups. 1 pt. = 2 cups

7 Fluid Ounce (fl.oz.) 8 fluid ounces is equal to 1 cup. 8 fl oz = 1c.

8 The “Big G”

9 Try this one: Ms. Itzhaki went to the store to buy 6 quarts of milk. They were out of quarts! She had to get pints instead. How many pints did she need to bring home the same amount of milk?

10 Guided/Independent

11 Tuesday, March 18, 2014 POTD Kelly has shoes that weigh different amounts. The following dot plot shows the weight of the shoes. Each dot represents 1 shoe. Which amount does most of Kelly’s shoes weigh? What is the difference between the lightest shoe and the heaviest shoe?

12 Homework Review

13 Metric Units of Capacity
Everything is related to the LITER: liter Milliliter What Equals What? 1 liter = 1,000 milliliters

14 Liters a r g We measure large things in liters. e

15 A Milliliter is about a drop.
A drop of water. An eyedropper of medicine.

16 Conversions in Metric! 1,000 mL = 1 L
When converting L to mL, put 3 zeros in place of the L—since you’re multiplying by 1,000. 2 L = ___________ mL 000 When converting mL to L, remove 3 zeros in place of the mL—since you’re dividing by 1,000. 7,000 mL = ___________ L

17 Ms. Itzhaki’s water cooler holds 5,000 mL of Kool-Aid
Ms. Itzhaki’s water cooler holds 5,000 mL of Kool-Aid. She has 2 bottles of Kool-Aid. Each bottle holds 2 L. Will the Kool-Aid fit in her water cooler?

18 = 4L 4 L = _______ mL… + Step Three: Answer the Question. 000
Step One: Draw the picture to show what she has. = 4L + 2 L 2 L Step Two: Convert to the lower unit--mL. 4 L = _______ mL… 000 Step Three: Answer the Question.

19 Guided/Independent

20 Wednesday, March 19, 2014 POTD We sampled sets of 8 m&m’s checking for the number of red in each set. The first sample we took had 7 reds out of 8 m&m’s or 7/8, the second sample had only 3 out 8 m&m’s red or 3/8 . Create a line plot using eighths, fourths, halves, and wholes from the m&ms data. 1/8, 1/8, (2) 2/8, 2/8, (2) 3/8, 3/8, 3/8, 3/8, 3/8, (5) 4/8, 4/8, (2) 5/8, 5/8, 5/8, 5/8, (4) 6/8, 6/8, (2) 7/8, 7/8, 7/8, 7/8, (4) 8/8, 8/8, 8/8, 8/8. 21 Homework Review

22 Customary Weight 16 ounces (oz) = 1 pound (lb)
2,000 pounds = 1 ton (T) To change from a larger unit of measure to a smaller unit, MULTIPLY. To change from a smaller unit of measure to a larger unit, DIVIDE.

23 Units of Weight/Mass. Weight : It is a measure of the heaviness of an object. (gravity) Mass: The amount of matter in an object. FYI…your mass is the same no matter where you are; however, your weight would change if you were on the moon. The common units for measuring weight in the customary system are ounces, pounds, and tons. Examples: A loaf of bread is a pound. A compact car weighs a ton.

24 A pound is equal to 16 ounces.
Pound (lb.) A pound is equal to 16 ounces. 1 lb. = 16 ounces. 1 pound of bread = One 16 ounce Jelly jar.

25 Ounce (oz.): 16 ounce is one pound . 16 (oz.) = 1 lb.
16 ounce jar = 1 pound cake

26 Ton (T) : One ton is equal to 2000 pounds. 1 T = 2000 lbs.
A compact car weighs one ton or 2000 pounds.

27 Guided/Independent

28 Thursday, March 20, 2014 POTD Use your line plot from yesterday to answer the following questions. 1. What is the difference between the pack with most amount of red m&m’s and the pack with the least amount of red m&m’s? 2. What is the amount that most packs of m&m’s had?

29 Homework Review

30 Kilogram Metric Units of Weight gram Milligram
Everything is related to the GRAM: What Equals What? 1 kilogram (kg) = 1,000 grams (g) 1 gram = 1,000 milligrams (mg) Kilogram gram Milligram

31 Metric Units of Weight/Mass
Gram 1 gram is about the weight of a paperclip. Gram (g): Measures weight grams is equal to 1 kilogram g = 1 kg.

32 One Kilogram is equal to 1000 grams.
Kilogram (kg.) One Kilogram is equal to 1000 grams. 1 kg = 1000 g

33 Guided/Independent 1. If one paperclip has the mass of 1 gram and 1,000 paperclips have a mass of 1 kilogram, how many kilograms are 8,000 paperclips? 2. Charlie's eraser has a mass of 20 grams. How many milligrams are in 20 grams? 3. Steven goes to the grocery store and is looking at a winter squash. It has a mass of 1.8 kilograms. How many grams is the winter squash? 4. Using the information in question 3, determine the number of milligrams in the winter squash. 5. A box contains 4 bags of sugar. The total mass of all 4 bags is 6 kg. What is the mass of each bag in grams?

34 Friday, March 21, 2014 POTD The following is the data from pencil lengths in one fourth grade class. Use the data to answer the following questions. 1. What is the difference between the longest length and the shortest length? 2. If you lined up all the pencils side by side, what would be the total length?
