Two Systems of Measurement Customary - what we use in the U.S. Metric - what most countries of the world use
4
Units of Measurement are what we use to measure things. Units of Measurement LENGTH How LONG is it? CAPACITY How much can it HOLD? WEIGHT How HEAVY is it? MASS How much MATTER is in it?
5
Customary Measurement Length – inch, foot, yard, mile Capacity – teaspoon, tablespoon, fluid ounce, cup, pint, quart, half-gallon, gallon Weight – ounce, pound, ton
6
Customary Units of Length INCH FOOT YARD MILE What Equals What? 1 foot (ft or ’) = 12 inches (in or ”) 1 yard (yd) = 3 feet or 36 inches 1 mile (mi) = 5,280 feet or 1,760 yards

Metric Measurement Length – millimeter, centimeter, decimeter, meter, kilometer Capacity – liter, kiloliter Mass – gram, kilogram
12
Everything is related to the METER: Metric Units of Length Kilometer meter Decimeter Centimeter Millimeter What Equals What? 1 centimeter (cm) = 10 millimeters (mm) 1 decimeter (dm) = 10 centimeters 1 meter (m) = 100 centimeters 1 kilometer (km) = 1,000 meters
13
Metric Units of Capacity Everything is related to the LITER: liter Milliliter What Equals What? 1 liter = 1,000 milliliters
14
Metric Units of Weight Everything is related to the GRAM: Kilogram gram Milligram What Equals What? 1 kilogram (kg) = 1,000 grams (g) 1 gram = 1,000 milligrams (mg)
