What is Self Esteem?

Which sentence was easier to complete?

Self-esteem is how people feel about themselves. Many people find the second sentence easier to complete, because people often focus on their weaknesses rather than their strengths. The first sentence indicates an appreciation of personal assets and strengths, which is necessary for self-esteem.

Discuss Worksheet Were students' responses similar? Did any of the responses surprise you? Which questions provide insight into the conditions for self-esteem? (1- personal assets and strengths, 2-sense of belonging, 3-sense of power, 4-sense of models)

Show students the visual_aids and invite them to add other ways to improve self-esteem. Divide class into groups of three to four. Ask each group to choose two ideas group members feel would most help to improve self- esteem and prepare a brief presentation for the class on the ideas they choose. For the presentation, groups must:' Classify the idea. Does it contribute to an appreciation of personal assets and strengths, a sense of belonging, a sense of power or positive role models? Give some examples of how this idea could be put into practice. Explain why this idea was chosen.

5. Discuss positive self-talk. Student Page: Talking to Myself Introduce "positive self-talk" as an additional way to improve self-esteem. Write "positive self-talk" on the visual aids and discuss the concept. Have students complete the student page.Talking to Myself Introduce CONCEPTS Everyone carries on an internal dialogue. A constant negative dialogue contributes to poor self-esteem. Positive dialogue contributes to positive self-esteem. Internal dialogue can be monitored and changed.

DISCUSSION POINTS Self-esteem influences feelings, thoughts and decisions. Positive self-esteem contributes to good mental health. Self-esteem can be improved.
