1 Chapter 3 Lesson 1 Good mental and emotional health helps you develop healthy self-esteem.

2 Warm-Up/Journal Josh has just lost the election for class president. He thought he was more popular and had better ideas than Annie, who won. He worked long and hard during the campaign, and thought most of the people in his class agreed with his platform. He feels bad about losing, and he’s not sure how he can face all his classmates. How could this impact hi self-esteem?

3 What is your Health IQ? Indicate how frequently you engage in each of the following behaviors. 1 = Never 2 = Occasionally 3 = Most of the time 4 = All of the time (Quiz on next slide)

4 Health IQ 1. I praise myself when I do a good job. ___
2. I do what I know is right, even if others use pressure to try to stop me from doing the right thing.___ 3. I am confident to try new things, even if I might fail at them.___ 4. I ask people for help if I need it.___ 5. I like to volunteer to help others when I can.__ 6. I concentrate on my strengths and work to improve my weaknesses. ___

5 How’d I do? 20 – 24 – They almost always have a sense of purpose, positive outlook, and self-esteem. 16 – 19 – These people often have a sense of belonging, purpose, and positive outlook 12 – This group is occasionally purposeful, rarely has a sense of belongings, and doesn’t necessarily have a positive outlook. 08 – 11- These individuals have a mostly negative outlook, no self- sufficiency, and low self-esteem. 00 – 07 – People who fall in this range have no sense of belonging, no sense of purpose, and an extremely negative outlook.

6 Mental/Emotional health
- is the ability to accept yourself and others, express and manage emotions, and deal with the demands and challenges you meet in your life. What are your life challenges?

7 Characteristics of Good Mental and Emotional Health
Sense of belonging – Feeling close to family friends, and others who provide you support. Sense of purpose – Recognizing that you have value and importance as a person. Positive outlook – Seeing the good in situations. Self-sufficiency – Having the confidence to make responsible decisions. Healthy self-esteem – Being able to accept and recover from failure.

8 Are you Resilient? Do you have the ability to adapt and recover from disappointment, difficulty, or crisis? Are you able to carry on when things don’t go your way?

9 Self-Esteem Is how much you value, respect, and feel confident about yourself. When you look in the mirror are you happy with what you see?

10 Competence Is having enough skills to do something.
Are you actually able to perform the given task?

11 Hierarchy of needs A ranked list of those needs essential to human growth and development.

12 Self-Actualization Striving to be the best you can.

13 Who has influenced your self-esteem?
Write a letter to a newspaper describing an important person in your life and how they have played a role in shaping your self-esteem. Minimum ½ page
