The Simple Past

We use the simple past to talk about completed past events and activities. I studied grammar last night. The children played games in the living room.

Affirmative Statements For all regular verbs, add an –ed ending in the past tense. This form is used for all subjects, both singular and plural. I stayed up late last night. The children played games in the garden. She listened to the news after dinner.

Negative Statements For negative past verbs, use did not before the simple form of the verb: My roommate did not like that restaurant. The contraction of did not is didn’t: I didn’t live in a dormitory last night. Our family didn’t own a computer until recently.

Spelling and pronunciation Page 136 – 137

Expressions of past time Yesterday The day before yesterday Yesterday morning Yesterday afternoon Yesterday evening Last night Last Monday/ Friday.. Last week ….. Page 137

Yes/No Questions For simple past tense yes/no questions with main verbs other than be, include did (n’t) before the subject. Did you study last week? Didn’t your father call yesterday? - The main verb is in the simple form. - There’s no final –ed ending in the question form.

Examples Did your mother cook last night? Yes, she did No, she didn’t Did you move to a new apartment? Yes, I did No, I didn’t Didn’t the neighbors paint their house a few years ago? Yes, they did No, they didn’t

Information Questions Simple past information questions have did before the subject. - Who did you call yesterday? I called my sister. - When did your relatives visit? They visited last month. - Why didn’t you order pizza? I wanted a home-cooked meal.

When who or what is the subject of the sentence, the main verb is in the simple past tense, did is NOT used before the subject. Who argued a lot? My sisters and I argued a lot.

Examples I travelled with my sister. Who did you travel with you? My parents stayed in their new apartment. Where did your parents stay? Nora visited her friend yesterday. Who visited her friend yesterday?
