Presentation transcript:

Fetal Heart Circulation Before birth, blood from the fetal heart that is destined for the lungs is shunted away from the lungs through a short vessel called the ductus arteriosus and returned to the aorta. When this shunt is open, it is said to be a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). The PDA usually closes at or shortly after birth, allowing blood to course freely to the lungs. Foramen ovale- in the fetal heart, a shunt from the right atrium to left atrium

Heart Murmur n Irregular heartbeat caused by increased in blood flow to the heart n an abnormal sound of the heart n sometimes a sign of abnormal function of the heart valves. ch?v=3NapobA3QbI

Arrythmia n irregular heartbeat n electrical impulses to the heart that coordinate heartbeats are not working properly, making the heart beat too fast/slow or inconsistently bxSAG-xV2Ys

Pacemaker n A pacemaker is a small device, about the size of a pocket watch, that's placed under the skin near your heart to help control your heartbeat. n Arrhythmias u the heart's rhythm is abnormal conditions/videos/heart-disease-and- cholesterol.htm

Heart Disease- The Silent Killer

What is Heart Disease? n A general term that covers a number of diseases which affect the heart, including coronary artery disease, heart-failure and angina. n Heart Disease is the number one killer in the United States.

Atherosclerosis and Arteriosclerosis n Arterioslcerosis u Hardening of the arteries n Atherosclerosis u Atherosclerosis is a specific type of arteriosclerosis, but the terms are sometimes used interchangeably. Atherosclerosis isthe buildup of fats and cholesterol in and on your artery walls (plaques), which can restrict blood flow. cholesterol.htm cholesterol.htm

Coronary Artery Disease Occurs when the coronary arteries that supply the heart muscle become blocked. Occurs when the coronary arteries that supply the heart muscle become blocked. n Partially blocked it causes angina. n Fully blocked it causes a myocardial infarction or a heart attack!

Myocardial Infarction or Heart Attack n Symptoms: uncomfortable pressure, fullness, squeezing pain, pain spreading to the shoulders, neck and arms. n Chest discomfort and light headedness n Anxiety/nervousness n Paleness or pallor n Increased irregular heart rate

Myocardial Infarction contd. n Feeling of impending doom If you or someone you know is having these symptoms call 911! s-conditions/videos/heart-disease- and-cholesterol.htm

Angioplasty and Stenting n Angioplasty u procedure for expanding arteries that have become blocked n Stenting u small mesh tube that's used to treat narrow or weak arteries AqBd4RExk
