5 STORIES “Berenice” 1835 “Hop-Frog” 1845 “The Fall of the House of Usher” 1839 “Mesmeric Revelation” 1849 The Pit and the Pendulum” POEMS “The Bells” 1849 “The Conqueror Worm” 1843 “The Sleeper” 1831 “Spirits of the Dead” 1829 “The Valley of Unrest” 1845

Edgar Poe was born January 9 th, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. His parents were, David and Elizabeth Poe. At the age of two, Edgar’s father abandoned the family, and shortly after that, his mother died. Edgar was adopted later by, John and Rosalie Allan. Living with the Allan family, Poe learned a lot. He was enrolled to Virginia University at only seventeen years of age. He was also a student at West Point in the U.S. Army. After being dismissed from West Point, Poe went to New York where hopefully, he could publish some of his poetry. He had no money, no friends, he was in serious debt, and had a very bad drinking problem. After Mr. Allan died, Poe finally got a job as a newspaper editor for his winning story, ”The Manuscript Found in a Bottle”, in Then in 1836, Poe married his cousin Virginia, in Virginia.

Later, in 1837, Poe went back to New York to try to get some money, but couldn’t. So he moved to Philadelphia where he wrote, “Ligeia”, and, “The Haunted Palace”. He did not receive any money for either of them though. Then in 1840, Poe got a job to work for Graham’s Magazine, where he wrote, “The Murders in Rue Morgue”. He quit in 1842 to make his own magazine. He tried to make a magazine, The Stylus, but failed. In 1843 he published some short stories like, “The Gold Bug”, and got one hundred dollars. That wasn’t enough, so he moved back to New York, where he worked d for The Broadway Journal in A year later it went out of business, so Poe moved his family to a small house. Shortly after moving, Virginia died of tuberculosis. Poe then went on, moving from city to city, then finally died October 7 th, 1849, in a street in Baltimore. No one really knows how he died.

I believe the cooping theory was the best answer because, it said that this was a common thing to do back then. It also said that the people that did it drugged the person and dressed the person up as someone else. That may have been why the article said he was delusional and dressed as someone else. I also believe the name, “Reynolds” he was referring to, was the man’s clothes he was wearing.

The Tell-Tale Heart The Tell-Tale Heart is a story about a man that may be slightly insane. He is explaining his devious plan to hopefully kill this guy with a “vulture” eye. He is very paranoid by that eye, so he decides to murder him. Poe uses suspense is this story by the insane man describing what he has and will do to the old man. It also tells that he has planned this so long, and takes so long to finally, go for the kill. This adds a lot of tension and suspense, and, a sort of, “I want to see what happens next!”, feeling to you. Overall, I thought it was a great storyline, and it was a fun, interactive, suspenseful story. It brought a lot of tension, and made you feel like your on the edge of your seat. I really loved the story. It was one of his best to me.

As I said again, this story was a brilliant, neat mixture of tension, suspense, mystery, and so many other examples. This was the first Poe story I read, and it won’t be the last.

I personally think that Edgar Allan Poe is the father of modern day horror stories. He brought so much life, suspense, tension, and action to his stories. I think that directors, producers, and writers have all been inspired from his life, and tales. Poe’s stories have personally connected to me because I like the suspenseful, scary, creepy-like stories. But, I absolutely hate horror movies. It was just pretty cool how he combined the creepiness slash action- horror into a story about whatever. And I think that’s awesome.
