Autumn Term ‘Destination Outer Space ‘ Year 2 Language, Literacy and Communication The children’s reading skills will continue to be developed through daily guided reading groups. Literacy work will also include Jolly Phonics, grammar, spellings and handwriting. The children will regularly practise their reading and writing skills throughout the school day in a variety of topic based tasks and across all areas of the curriculum. Oracy sessions will further develop the children’s speaking and listening skills as they will be expected to consider what has been said before adding their response or opinion. Mathematical Development Practical maths work will include working with money, weighing and measuring using standard measures. The children will also be encouraged to improve their understanding of passing time. Numeracy sessions will be taught every day to further enhance the children’s knowledge and understanding of counting, place value, written sums and problem solving. Knowledge and Understanding of the World The children will be finding out about the solar system. They will begin their research with planet Earth and identify Caerleon, Wales and the United Kingdom on maps and globes. Science work will include the pull of gravity, investigating shadows and electricity. The 1969 lunar landing will also be discussed as an historical event. Children will be encouraged to log onto the computers and use a variety of programs and I.T. equipment to support the curriculum. Creative Development The children will be composing actions, sounds and percussion instruments to accompany a wide variety of stories and songs. They will continue to develop their creative skills through sketching, painting, collage work and making models They will be encouraged to select the appropriate tools and materials and give reasons for their choices. Physical Development The children will be taught Welsh traditional dances and practise their ball skills through competitive games. They will continue to develop their sense of spatial awareness when refining and sequencing their movements using small and large apparatus. Personal and Social Development, Well-Being and Cultural Diversity New routines and expected appropriate behaviour have been discussed. The children have been reminded about our new school rules and made aware of the rewards and sanctions in place. They will design posters to show their understanding of a co-operative class and the necessity of working together. We will be finding out about different customs and religions through festivals such as Sukkot, Harvest, Diwali and Christmas. Welsh Language Development The children will be encouraged to use incidental language throughout the school day and follow instructions and commands in Welsh. They will be introduced to new vocabulary and phrases linked to the topic. Daily 'Gadair Boeth' sessions will develop the children's ability to ask and answer questions in Welsh
