Staff Class Teachers: Mrs Wilkinson/Mrs Howes Mrs H Yates Teaching Support: Mrs Stratford, Miss Hall and Mrs Bissell

Groups In Year 2, children have been split into two groups for Literacy and Numeracy. Mrs Howes and Mrs Yates are teaching the two groups with the support of Miss Hall, Mrs Stratford and Mrs Bissell. Children will be informally assessed from week to week and there is room for movement between groups according to the needs of the children. The children will also be split into groups for the teaching of phonics.

Assessment Throughout the year, children in Year 2 will be continually assessed. During May and June 2015, Year 2 children will be undertaking SATS assessments. These will include reading comprehension, spelling, writing and numeracy tasks. The overall grade given at the end of the school year is based on both SATS tests and on-going teacher assessments. (If you could avoid taking your children out of school two weeks either side of the Spring Bank Holiday it would be very much appreciated).

Reading  Your child will read individually to an adult once a week. Please ensure that books are sent into school on their reading day.  When you listen to your child read at home, please make a note in their comment books.  E-books will be issued to the children soon and individual log-in details will be given to you at our ‘Bug Club’ information meeting in the near future.

Reading 2  Children who need extra reading/writing support will receive additional support as is appropriate to their needs.  Children will also read within Literacy lessons and across the curriculum.  We are encouraging children to bring in books from home for daily independent reading and discussion sessions.

Creative Curriculum Some of the foundation subjects will be taught through a topic based creative curriculum with Literacy, Numeracy and Science skills included. Our topic for the Autumn Term is ‘Important People and Events in History’, which includes The Gunpowder Plot and The Life and Work of John Cadbury. Spring Term: Contrasting Locations. Summer Term: ‘The Generation Game’ (recent history).

Homework Every child has been given a homework book. Homework will usually be given out on a Friday and collected in on the following Wednesday. It is important that children are encouraged to complete their homework as it will reinforce the work they are undertaking at school. Children have a reward chart in the front of their books to encourage them to return homework regularly.

Spelling Homework Spellings will be given to your child weekly, based on what has been learnt in the phonic sessions that week. These will also be given out on a Fri and tested the following Wed.

P.E. A reminder: For P.E. your child will need: a pair of white or black shorts, a white t-shirt, and a pair of black pumps (all clearly labelled with their name). P.E. days will be Mondays or Tuesdays. Earrings and watches must be removed and long hair tied back. Please encourage your child to become independent at dressing themselves and looking after their belongings.

Snack Time Please send your child to school with a healthy snack, labelled with their name. OR Send them with a maximum of 50p to spend at our healthy tuck shop. Please ensure that tuck money is in a labelled purse/wallet or container etc.

Water Bottles Please send your child to school with a named water bottle, changed at least once a week (clearly labelled) as water bottles are not being sold at school anymore.
