At the end of this lesson, the students will analyze the impact of gold in luring people to the American West Warm-up Question: Examine the “Data File” on page 227 and answer the following: 1. Explain how a town can lose their populations so quickly? 2. Analyze the long odds of striking it rich by describing the motives that drove people to find gold. Motivation: Would you leave your hometown to go “strike it rich?” This does not mean to leave to go find gold, but maybe for a big job opportunity.

1. A Family Affair Read the caption and answer the following: How does greed impact a person’s decisions? 2. Sluices and Rockers Describe the impact of technology on the search for gold 3. In the Bowels of the Earth Describe the conditions miners faced as they mined for gold deep in the Earth 4. Panning for Gold Summarize the process for using a pan to find gold.

Use the data from the Data File to create a bar graph that shows the percentage of people who set out for the Klondike who 1. did nt get there, 2. got there, 3. staked claims, 4. found gold, and 5. became rich

Complete the review guide of Chapter 5, if you do not finish the guide, it is homework to be submitted on Monday
