2  Objective: The students will explain Chinese society by describing the significance of the Chinese extended family  Drill: Explain the meaning of the following terms 1. commercial capitalism 2. clan 3. porcelain

3 Economic Changes Increased population from 80 million in 1390 to 300 million at the end of the 1700’s What percentage change is that? Identify the implications of the population increase long period of peace/stability improvement in food supply less land available for each family growth in manufacturing increased trade between provinces-what is a province Did not develop commercial capitalism no free trading cities government control Business looked down on heavy taxes on trade and manufacturing/low taxes on farming

4 Chinese society organized around the family Extended family the ideal family unit Elderly kept in high regard Clan supported the family beyond the extended family Women could not be educated, have a job in government, inherit property, divorce Women had their feet bounded-more marriageable, not all clans practiced this

5 Independent practice Porcelain Read page 282 and complete the 2 questions to be handed in at the end of class

6 Describe the significance of the Chinese extended family. What was the role of women in Chinese families, and how did their role vary depending on social status?

7 Read pages 284-289 Define the terms under the content Vocabulary for Wednesday Prepare for test on Friday over Chapter 9
