The students will analyze to what extent the Great Depression affected the economy in the U.S. and throughout the world be describing the outcomes of the Depression Announcement: Chapter 14 Test next Wednesday Project for February: African-American research Drill: Analyze the graphs on page 488 and answer the following 1. In what year did the biggest jump in bank failures occur? 2. What measure on the graphs seems to indicate an improvement in the U.S. economy during the Depression?

Financial Collapse Many Americans withdrew their money from banks 659 banks failed in 1929 6,000 banks failed in 1933 No insurance to protect depositors’ money GNP cut in half between 1929 and 1932 World Wide Shock waves Europe suffered through a depression in the 1920’s High debt payments Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act-highest tariff ever.

The Depression in the Cities Many lost their homes People constructed shantytowns Soup kitchens/Bread lines The Impact on African-Americans and Latinos Highest unemployment rate Lowest paid jobs Increase in violence due to competition for jobs

5 The Depression in Rural Areas Farmers could grow crops to feed their families 400,000 farms foreclosed between ‘29-’32 The Dust Bowl Caused by over-farming of the land and drought Many left the lands of Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas Question: How did the Great Depression affect the lives of ordinary people in cities and towns and on farms?

6 Effects on the American Family
Men in the Streets and on the Rails Some men left their families 2 million men wandered the country No direct relief from the federal government Women and Children Struggle to Survive Women canned and sewed clothes Tried to save as much money as possible Some cities refused to hire married women Children experienced serious health problems Schools closed and many shortened school years Question: Why would married women be denied a job during the depression?

7 Social and Psychological Effects Suicide rate increased 30% Some put off the doctor, college or getting married Developed habits of saving and thriftiness
