The students will analyze the impacts of the New Deal on women and minorities by describing the treatment of each group. Announcement: Chapter 15 next Monday/Tues Due: African-American project February 29 Drill: Analyze the graph on page 521 and answer the following: 1. What trend characterized union membership between 1931 and 1933? Between 1936 and 1940? 2. How did the New Deal affect union membership in the late 1930’s?

New Opportunities for Women Frances Perkins-1st women cabinet member secretary of labor helped create Social Security FDR wanted the women’s vote Men pushed back-women taking jobs for men NRA set 2 wages CCC & FERA hired fewer women More married women began working 11.7% in 1930 to 15.6% in 1940

4 New Opportunities for African Americans
Mary McLeod Bethune-head of Office of Minority Affairs in the NYA Organized the “Black Cabinet” to advise FDR William H., Hastie Robert C. Weaver both in the Department of the Interior Eleanor Roosevelt supported civil rights Marian Anderson concert, 1939

5 President fails to support Civil Rights
FDR needed Southern Democrats FDR did not support anti-lynching law and abolishment of the poll tax TVA, CCC FHA discriminated against African- Americans Southern Tenant Farmers’ Union protect sharecroppers/tenant farmers

6 Mexican-American Fortunes
Received fewer benefits than African- Americans Little pay as farm laborers Received no benefits from CCC and WPA due to migrant status

7 Native American Gains John Collier-commissioner of Indian Affairs created Indian Reorganization Act of 1934 Native Americans received full citizenship in 1924 Act restored some reservation land to tribal ownership

10 Independent Work On page explain the causes and impacts of the 3 violent strikes at GM, Ford, and Republic steel. Do you think women and African-Americans made significant progress toward equality during the 1930s? Support your answer with evidence from the book.
