2 The students will describe Western Europe and North America after WWII by summarizing the process of rebuilding Announcement: There were be a bi-weekly World History Review Session in Mr. Gregg’s Room. The Chapter 19 test will be Friday, April 8 Warm-up: Examine map on page 679 and answer the following: 1. Compare this map to the one on page 665. Which countries were members of NATO and the EEC in 1957? 2. Which three countries received the most Marshall Plan aid? Between 1945 and 1951, which European country had the biggest increase in GDP?

3 Western Europe: New Unity Marshall Plan helped those countries that aligned with the plan France and de Gaulle Charles de Gaulle war-hero for France Started the 5 th Republic in 1958 Wanted France to be a strong nation exploded a nuke in 1960 Economy grew under de Gaulle Civil protests and a general strike led to de Gaulle resigning in April 1969

4 The Economic Miracle West Germany experienced economic growth Leaders of West Germany worked with the U.S. and wanted to work with France Economic downturn in 1969 led to moderate socialist reform leaders The Decline of Great Britain Churchill voted out Clement Attlee voted in as P.M. created a welfare state socialized medicine for all citizens in order to pay for this, Britain reduced spending abroad and increased taxes

5 European Economic Community France, West Germany, Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg created a free-trade area, no tariffs only tax goods from countries not in the EEC

6 You will complete the map and questions in class to submit as grade.

7 Read Chapter 19.2 and prepare for a Reading check on Wednesday.
