In Stratford Hall Plantation, Westmoreland, Virginia, on January 19 th of 1807, was when Robert Edward Lee was born. His parents are Henry Lee III and Ann Hill Carter Lee. He had a very sad childhood, because his father had gone to debtor’s prison when Robert E. Lee was just three. After his father was free, he left his family for a long time. He died before Robert E Lee ever saw him again. However Lee still had found time to have fun. He was a very good student, then later he was accepted to West Point. His influencer was his father, who taught him to be the better man than his father ever was.

Robert E Lee worked hard in school. After school, he married Mary Anna Randolph Custis. They had seven children. Their names are; George Lee, Mary Custis Lee(daughter), William, Anne Carter, Eleanor Agnes Lee, and Robert Edward Lee Jr. with Mildred Childe Lee as the baby. He went to West Point Academy for college. His careers were the superintendent of West Point, Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army, and finally the General of all the Confederate States Army.

Robert E. Lee was a military officer first in the United States Army. He favored the South though, because it was his home land. He was an honored general in the Confederate Army. Robert E. Lee lost so very many battles. He eventually surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant.

After the Civil War, Robert E Lee was a famous general in the South. After he surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant, then he went home. His new career was President of what is now Washington and Lee University. People thought of Lee as a hero to the South. Robert E Lee is one of America’s most revered iconic figures of American Military Leaders.

On October the 12 th of 1870, Lee died of a heart disease. He was in Lexington, Virginia, and was only 63 when he died. All of his children survived for only a little longer, but his wife died three years after his death. He was buried at Lee Chapel at Washington and Lee University. His last words were said to be:“ Strike the tent.”
