3 West Point Went when he was 17 Did not care for fighting. He liked math

4 Mexican War Order to Jefferson barracks near, St. Louis, Mo Became acquainted with nearly all the officers, especially Robert E. Lee He was in nearly every battle He came out of the war as a Brevet Captain

5 He gets Married While in the army he meant Julia Dent She was a slave-owners daughter Within three months he proposed to her Got married August 22, 1848 His first child was Fredrick Dent Grant, born 1850

6 Civil War He got volunteers together in Springfield first after Fort Sumter After a little bit he went home Weeks later he got a telegraph from the governor saying they needed him back He was promoted to a colonel

7 Civil War After a few fights he had 20,000 men cause of all the volunteers he was getting In 1862 he took Fort Henry Also took Fort Donelson on the Cumberland River

8 Civil War Tried to win the Mississippi Valley to split the Confederates in two First success was the battle of Shiloh

9 Civil War Won the battle at Fort Vicksburg and Made Grant look really good They surrendered on July 4, 1863, a day after Gettysburg Five days later, Port Hudson fell as well

10 Civil War Grant was given supreme command of all the armies in the West Lincoln asked rant to come to Washington to fight against Robert E. Lee Grant was appointed Lieutenant General commanding all the federal armies

11 Civil war On May 4, 1864, he crossed the Rapidan Lee spotted him and attacked him Grant suffered appalling losses But lee was amazed by Grant’s persistance

13 Presidency In 1866, Congress made him full general, a title not used since George Washington Grant received 214 electoral college votes in the election

14 Presidency There were problems such as the war brought great poverty to the south There were also a lot of scandals that hurt Grant’s reputation, but grant did not let them bother him

15 His Death He died July 23, 1885 He died of cancer
