Plantations and Slavery

They made up 40% of the South’s population

That is until the indentured servants served out their service and became free

West Africans knowledge of growing rice allowed rice plantations to become popular

Toiled in groups of Under an OVERSEER or a man hired by planters to watch over and direct slaves Strenuous, exhausting labor for 15 hours a day

Lived in small one room cabin Week of food: ¼ bushel of corn and 1 pound of pork Some allowed to plant own food

A way to protest enslavement

Worked slowly damaged goods purposefully carried out orders the wrong way
