2 Large Landowners Lived in the South
Used indentured servants and slaves for labor Educated Rich social life

3 Farmers Grew what would grow best in the region
Used family members for labor

4 Artisans Worked as craftsmen in towns and on plantations
Lived in small towns and cities

5 Women Worked as caretakers, and homemakers Could not vote
Very few could be educated

6 Free African Americans
Were able to own land Had more economic freedom, could work for pay and decide how to spend money Not allowed to vote

7 Indentured Servants Agreed to work without pay for 4-7 years to pay for their passage to America Were free at the end of their contract

8 Enslaved African Americans
Were captured in Africa, sold to slave traders then were shipped to the colonies where they were sold into slavery Were owned as property for life with no rights Children of enslaved African Americans were born into slavery
