It is so important that parents support these events. However, if at any time there is something you need to speak to your child’s teacher about, please feel free to call the school and arrange an appointment. Since the last newsletter, the children have enjoyed Superhero Day. Visitors from the Mountain Rescue, Fire Service and our local GP, were our heroes for the day. Thank you to everyone who took part. Year 6 have enthusiastically returned from their annual residential trip to Talybont, where they enjoyed a range of outdoor activities such as, orienteering, mountain walking and canoeing. Mr Aylett said how impressed he was with the children’s ability to work as a team and in their overall maturity. It really was a great start to their final year in the school. Thank you for your continued support of the school’s work and don’t forget to check out the website for up-to-date information. Mrs J Broad Friday 2 nd October 2015 Gilwern Primary School Nurture, Empower, Achieve Breakfast Club Safety As a school, we pride ourselves on the safety of our children. However it has come to our attention that there are a handful of parents who are using the school car park to drop off children for Breakfast Club. We respectfully remind you to park safely on the road outside of the school and walk the children into Breakfast Club. We also request that an appropriate speed limit is observed around the school. Home Time Safety Please ensure that once you have collected your child at the end of the school day that they are fully supervised. Playing with sticks, climbing on walls and riding bikes /scooters is not allowed

This year our focus is on Numeracy across the curriculum – using and applying the mathematical skills. This fortnight’s numeracy focus is ‘Multiplication Tables.’ Please see attached sheet to give you information on our Maths focus Attendance Week ending - 18th September Reception – 94.0% Year 1 – 97.7% Year 2 – 99.0% Year 3 – 95.0% Year 4 – 96.2% Year 5 – 96.8% Year 6 – 98.7% Week ending - 25 th September Reception – 94.7% Year 1 – 99.6% Year 2 – 97.3% Year 3 – 96.3% Year 4 – 97.6% Year 5 – 100% Year 6 – 99.7% Well done to Year 2 and Year 5 for being the school’s highest attenders for both weeks, with other classes following closely behind. The LEA has set the school’s attendance target at 95.8% and as a school we have to monitor and report on attendance. Take a look to see if your child’s class falls below the LEA target. Thank you… The Macmillan Coffee afternoon held at the school last Friday was a huge success with many delicious cakes being consumed. We would like to thank everyone who supported this event by attending and donating cakes. Well over £250 was raised for this very worthy cause. Invitation Please could parents make alternative arrangements for distributing children’s party invitations as staff will not be responsible for giving them out. Healthy Snacks Don’t forget! The school has a fruit tuck shop which sells whole pieces of fruit to Junior children on a daily basis. Foundation Phase children have fruit cut for them prior to eating and this can be paid for through the class teacher. Fresh water is always available – however, children need to bring their own drinks bottles.
