History of Computers! Claire Bromm March 28 th, 2012

Introduction Have you ever wandered what the history of computers were? Well in this power point you will learn all about the history of computers.

Main Topics Things you will learn about are: – Early Computational Devices – Early Computers – Generations & Main Components – Inventors/ Developers – Internet

Early Computational Devices Some early computational devices are the Abacus and punch cards. The Abacus was the first external aid to computing math. Punch cards were paper that contained digital information represented by holes.

Early Computers ENIAC- First general purpose electronic computer. Mark 1- First programmable digital computer made in the U.S. EDSAC- Second practical stored program computer.

Early Computers Continued. EDVAC- One of the earliest electronic computers. UNIVAC- First commercial computer in U.S. First Microcomputer- Computer with a microprocessor as a CPU.

Generations & Main Components First Generation- Vacuum Tubes – Second- Transistors – Third Generation- Integrated Circuits –

Generations Continued. Fourth- Microprocessors – Present Fifth- Artificial Intelligence – Present & Beyond.

Inventors/ Developers Steven Jobs- Co Founder of Apple Steven Wozniak- Co Founder of Apple Bill Gates- Co Founder of Microsoft Paul Allen- Co Founder of Microsoft

Inventors Continued. Tim Berners-Lee- Inventor of the World Wide Web. Marc Andreessen- Created Mosaic, & co founder of Netscape Communications Co. Charles Babbage- (Father of Computing)- Invented First Mechanical Computer.

Inventors Continued. Herman Hollerith- Father of modern automatic computing, created punch cards. Blaise Pascal- Invented one of the first mechanical calculations.

Inventors Continued. John Von Newman- Worked on the design for EDVAC Eckert & Mauchly- Created Eckert & Mauchly Computer Corporation.

Internet The birth of the net grew out of an experiment began by the Department of Defense in the 1960’s. ARPANET- Core network of what came to be the Internet.

Internet Continued. The first internet browser was Mosaic, its clean and easy to understand user interface helped open up the Web to the public.

Summary Now you have learned all about the history of computers. I hope you now know how computers came to be like the ones you use.
