History of Computers By Brock Braniff

The history of computers is quite an interesting subject. It is fun to know which individuals started what company, but also can be helpful if someone were to go into a field with computers.

Home Early Computational Device Early Computers Generations and Main Component Inventors/Developers Internet

Abacus The abacus was one of the earliest computing devices. No it is not run electronically, but can be used for mathimatical purposes.

EDSAC EDSAC was one of the earliest electronically run computers. It was developed in Britain by John von Newman. EDSAC stands for Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator.

ENIAC ENIAC was the first electronic computer. It was developed to calculate missile trajectory in WWII.

Department of Defense It all started when the Department of Defense developed ARPANET. Computers were originally being used by the government for our countries defense or even battle.

First Browser The first browser was Mosaic. It was produced as computers were being sold to the public. Mosaic caused more people to buy computers.

Inventors/Developers The Department of Defense developed ARPANET. It was a way for the military to communicate faster over long distances.

Inventor/Developer Mark Andreesen developed the first browser, Mosaic.

Inventors/Developers Tim Berners Lee invented the Worl Wide Web This connected everyone who owned a computer.

Inventors/Developers Steven Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne found the major corporation known as Apple on April 1,1976.

Inventors/Developers Bill Gates and Paul Allen found Microsoft. Microsoft was founded on April 4, 1975.

The Future These were only the main events in the computer’s timeline. There were many other earlier machines that paved the way for today’s computers that were not mentioned here. I find those machines and the people who made them to be the most interesting because they were the pioneers of the computer world Looking toward the future, one can read an article of what new technology might be coming in the next 3 to 5 years, and there’s a good chance it will. The next 30, 20, or even 10 years is and always will be anyone’s guess. With what computer’s today can accomplish, it is hard to imagine what will be next.

Generations First Generation- Vacuum tubes, Hollerith and Babbage Second Generation-Transistors John von Newman Third Generation- Integrated Circuit Fourth Generation- Microprocessor Fifth Generation- Future
