T HE + GEOGRAPHICAL NAMES We use the in front of: 1. the names of rivers (the Danube) 2. seas and oceans (the Mediterranean, the Pacific) 3. mountain ranges (the Tatras) 4. groups of islands (the Canary Islands) We don’t use the in front of the names of: 1. continents (South America) 2. towns (London) the Hague 3. lakes (Lake Niagara) 4. single mountains (Mount Everest) 5. single islands (Majorca) 6. countries (Hungary) the Netherlands, the Philippines, the United States, the Czech Republic

T HE + SINGULAR NAMES We sometimes use the + singular noun to talk about the whole category, or a type of machine, animal, etc. The mobile phone has become a very popular gadget. The rat is an exceptionally intelligent animal. We use the in front of musical instruments. Can you play the piano? but There was a piano in the room.
