Higher Skills and Techniques Principles of Effective Practice Factors that influence the development of Performance © K Erskine 2008

Setting clear objectives Consider present strengths and weaknesses Decide on which aspect you wish to improve May wish to measure self against a model performer Achievable stages Specific targets that are realistic – helps keep level of confidence high Avoids boredom and fatigue

Work / rest ratio You need to balance work with rest. Why? Don’t overdo it Don’t injure yourself Don’t become so tired that no improvement takes place

Work / rest ratio cont You need to work out your work / rest ratio in order to help make your training specific to your needs. Things to consider :- Your previous experience in the activity Your level of practical ability How difficult / complex the skill is The physical demands involved in the practice

Physical Demands How physical is the activity?– high level or low level of physical activity

Difficulties of skill involved Simple or complex skill? Few or many subroutines? Element of danger?

Level of Practical Ability Beginner Intermediate District/county level International

Progression Practices should be progressive Experience success before moving onto next level Ties in with setting clear objectives Do not move on until ready!!!

Identifying strengths and weaknesses Find out what you are good at and what you need to work on. Helps plan practice

Factors that affect the development of Performance Motivation Concentration Feedback

Motivation May be internal or external Money, medals, qualificationsOwn level of desire to succeed Everyone has an optimum level of motivation Different people have different levels of motivation

Concentration Different degrees of concentration needed at different stages of learning Important that you try to avoid distractions especially in the planning stage of learning Cannot be kept at 100% all the time – certain occasions demand more concentration Concentration very important in stop / start activities e.g. basketball, volleyball etc.

Feedback Internal (kinaesthetic) External (extrinsic) Verbal Visual Written Video Knowledge of results Model performance checklist Observation schedules Positive Immediate Specific and accurate
