End Marks By: Marlijne, Danielle and Anna

 End marks are periods, exclamation points and question marks. These are the only things that can finish a sentence.

PERIOD …

How to use a period You use a period:  At the end of a declarative sentence  At the end of an imperative sentence  At the end of an indirect sentence

Declarative sentence  A declarative sentence is a sentence that makes a statement. It is a sentence you use when you want to tell something.  Ex: Joe has a girly laugh.

 Most of the time a declaritive sentence is shortened to one or two words, especially when answering a question.  Ex: Where is my straightener? My room.

Imperative sentence  An imperative sentence is a sentence that asks or tells someone to do do something.  Ex: Go throw that away please.

 When an imperative sentence also expresses excitement or emotion, an exclamation point is used after it.  Ex: Get lost!

Indirect question  An indirect question is the part of a statement that tells what someone asked, but it doesn’t give the excact words of the person who asked the question.  Ex: My teacher asked me if I did all my work.

 But remember periods are not only used at the end of a sentence. You can also use them after an initial or abbreviation.  Ex: My dentist is Dr. R. Wade.  Ex: Etc.

 And when making an outline or a list.  Ex:  A. Painters  B. European  C. Vincent Van Gogh

 And in between dollars and cents and to seperate units.  Ex: I paid $25.99 for this sweater.

QUESTION MARK ???

How to use a question mark  You use a question mark:  At the end of an interrogative sentence.

Interrogative Sentence  An interrogative sentence is a sentence that asks a question.  Ex: Did you see the Hunger Games?  This is a direct question, because it gives the exact words of the person who asked the question.

EXCLAMATION POINT !!!

How to use an exclamation point  You use an exclamation point:  At the end of an exclamatory sentence.  After an interjection.

Exclamatory sentence  An exclamatory sentence is a sentence that expresses strong emotion.  Ex: We’re over!

Interjection  An interjection is a word or group of words used to express strong feelings.  Ex: Watch out!  Ex: Yay!
