1 Clauses and structure Independent Clause: expresses a complete thought and can stand by itself Example: The customers loved the chicken soup. Dependant clause: does not express a complete thought and cannot stand by itself in a sentence Example: before Tim arrived

2 Sentence structures Simple Sentence: contains one independent clause and no dependant clauses EX: Fiona played the piano Compound sentence: contains two or more independent clauses and no dependant clauses EX: Fiona played the piano and John played the guitar.

Complex sentence: Sentence that contains one independent clause and at least one dependant clause EX: While the audience came into the room, Fiona played the piano Compound-Complex sentence: Contains two or more independent clauses and at least one dependant clause EX: While the audience came into the room, Fiona played the piano, and John played the guitar

4 Sentences according to purpose Declarative sentence: makes a statement and ends with a period Imperative sentence: gives a command or makes a request. Most imperative sentences end with a period. A strong command ends with an exclamation point. Interrogative sentence: asks a question and ends with a question mark Exclamatory Sentence: shows excitement or expresses strong feeling and ends with an exclamation point
