The Netherlands became a commercial and naval power in the 17 th Century Challenged England for supremacy Three Anglo-Dutch Naval Wars fought over 100 years

Dutch also became a colonial power, especially in the East Indies (Dutch East India Company) The Dutch West India Company maintained profitable business in the Caribbean & South America

Taking advantage of land along the Hudson River claimed by Henry Hudson on behalf of the Netherlands….the Dutch West India Company established a new colony to participate in the Fur Trade….New Netherlands.

The Dutch received Manhattan Island from the Native Americans*** for worthless trinkets. Today, Manhattan is considered the most valuable real estate in the world.

1624 – Dutch West India Company New Amsterdam ▫ German, Swedish, Dutch, & Finnish settlers Excellent trade using the Hudson River & a good harbor English wanted it & attacked in 1664 ▫ Renamed it New York ▫ Gift to the Duke of York Threat to English trade and settlements Dutch surrendered Proprietary/Royal Colony
