Welcome to SS11! Today we are continuing the government unit and looking at different political ideologies. Look at the 2 hand-outs on your desk. Use word bank to correctly label each square. If you don’t know, take your best guess! Once completed, Star the boxes that apply to Canadian politicis.

Political Ideology A system of ideas or ideals that influence decisions. Each political party subscribes to a certain ideology.

Political Spectrum a method to explain how political ideologies relate to one another. Have you heard of the term “left wing” or “right wing?” – this is what they are talking about.

Where are you on the Spectrum? I believe the government should tax richer people at a higher rate than poor people (ie: the richer you are, the more you get taxed) The government should spend less money on our armed forces Free day care should be provided to all families, even if it means an increase in taxes If a company is seriously polluting the environment, it should be shut down even if people will loose their jobs. The government should regulate (control) prices – even if it means businesses may make less money

World’s Smallest Political Quiz Take the quiz and chart where you are on the spectrum. Read all the descriptions - do you agree with where you ended up?

Left Wing “sharing is caring” Supports change/progress Focus on equality – wealth should be distributed more evenly amongst everyone. Prices on items should be regulated by the government Government should play a larger role in order to provide social services Rich pay higher taxes Often more concerned about the environment Center Tradition is important, but change must happen if most people support it Government should play a moderate roll when it improves people’s lives Some taxation is good, as long as it goes to the right places to benefit the most ppl. Right-Wing “looking out for number one” #money Tradition is important – change should be treated with caution Government should play a very small role – in the capitalist system, private business will ensure people’s needs are met Strong emphasis on law and order to protect tradition

Liberal Party of Canada The Liberal Party of Canada believes that when individuals and families are given the opportunity to succeed, the economy grows and Canadians become stronger. That’s why equality of opportunity is a fundamental Liberal principle. Liberals are ready to work as partners with the provinces and territories to ensure a national standard of excellence in the delivery of health services. The Liberal Party of Canada will also keep fighting so that more can be done for mental health, caregivers, home and long term care.

Conservative Party of Canada Creating jobs through training, trade and low taxes. Eliminating the deficit by by controlling spending and cutting waste. Making our streets safe through new laws to protect children and the elderly. Standing on guard for Canada by investing in the development of Canada’s North, cracking down on human smuggling and strengthening the Canadian Armed Forces.

New Democratic Party New Democrats affirm a role for government in helping to create the conditions for sustainable prosperity. We believe in a rules-based economy, nationally and globally, in which governments have the power to address the limitations of the market in addressing the common good by having the power to act in the public interest for social and economic justice, and for the integrity of the environment. New Democrats are committed to working together for peace, international co-operation, and the common good of all – the common good being our fundamental purpose as a movement and as a party.
