Dorset Resource Efficiency Club

The Resource Efficiency Club and its Objectives National programme, promoted locally by SWRDA and Envirowise Implemented by: –Dorset Business (as Project Manager) –And SWWMG (as Delivery Partner) Feasibility Study (completed mid 2006) Project - one year, funded (from 11/06)

The Resource Efficiency Club obligations… Generate savings at least 5x funding –Averaged across all member companies Target - £200k in savings Member Obligations: –report regularly; provide resources Sustainable - through ‘green networking’ groups - mentoring, best practice, etc

The REC Team Lorraine Hubbard – Dorset Business –Manufacturing background; project management. Trevor Muddimer (East Dorset) –resource management / low carbon; consultancy Tim Linford (West Dorset) –local government / energy; consultancy Emma Burlow (North Dorset) –environmental consultancy

The REC – in action Benchmarking visits – –to review process’, resources and wastes. –complete proforma on resource usage. Consultant to Research/identify/suggest options. Follow-on visits – –Discuss and agree changes and targets –help with implementation, –training; ‘special projects’ –performance monitoring Consultancy - typically 2 to 3 days (in hours) Regular club ‘meetings’ to exchange ideas/mentor.

Four savings examples Pilkingtons - floor tiles –Refined the production process to reduce waste resulting in improved efficiency. New Look – retail –Improved utilisation of energy, revised goods transit items (using recycled material), raised awareness (‘green’ day/competition). Bowlplex – entertainment –Changed Halogens to Low Energy lights in 18 UK sites. Osmond Group – office equipment supplier –Energy savings, raised awareness (An Inconvenient Truth).

REC – retrospective… REC contains a wide range of company sizes. Company types range from: –Office, healthcare, industrial, retail, & entertainment. Issues: –Energy, water, production resources and wastes. Savings: –Reported at £261K for the ‘implementation’ year –And significantly more in the next full year.
